They came to DeNunzio Pool as wide-eyed freshmen, young newcomers trying to figure out their roles in a program loaded with tradition.
There is no way this group could have imagined just how important their roles would eventually be.
Mary Kate Davis, Alisabeth Marsteller, Colleen McHugh, Claire McIlmail, Larkin Papa, Lily Reisinger, Lindsay Temple, Maddy Veith, and Elsa Welshofer became the first senior class in more than 30 years to compete under a new head coach. While they had their own transition to deal with, they also understood what was required of them to help keep the program moving forward, even beyond this year. On Saturday, during their final home event inside DeNunzio Pool, their immense contributions to the program will be honored during a 1 pm home event against Lehigh.
"I'm looking forward to honoring this special group of women," head coach Bret Lundgaard said. "They have played a vital role in this transition, and the leadership and example they have provided for their younger teammates will benefit Princeton for years to come. They should be proud of their contribution to this team."
By no means is their work finished — they have a massive February (and hopefully March) still to come. Princeton will head to Boston next weekend for the annual H-Y-P meet at Blodgett Pool, and then the Tigers will return there two weeks later for the 2018 Ivy League Swimming & Diving Championships. Three different teams have won the title over the last three years, and no team has repeated since Princeton won in both 2010 and 2011. Yale will enter as the reigning champion.
But those are matters still to come. Saturday, Princeton will honor this great class that helped the Tigers win the 2015 title, will fight for another one next month, and also made sure the team understood what it took both in and out of the pool to succeed for years to come.
