Squash Teams Open 2018 By Hosting Virginia Sunday
January 03, 2018 | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
Both the Princeton men's and women's squash teams concluded 2017 in impressive fashion, and both made moves up their national rankings from the preseason poll. Both teams will enter 2018 with the biggest of goals, and they will try to get off on the right foot with home matches Sunday against an upstart Virginia program.
Both matches will be played over two shifts, and all courts will be streamed live over the Ivy League Network.
The men's team, which moved to seventh in the final CSA poll of 2017, will begin play at 11 am against 14th-ranked Virginia. Princeton opened the season with a 4-1 record, with the lone loss coming 5-4 to third-ranked St. Lawrence. The Tigers' youth movement continued with three players playing a significant amount in the top six, including #1 standout Youssef Ibrahim, who is undefeated on the young season. Returning All-American Adhitya Raghavan has teamed with Ibrahim to form a powerful duo at the top of the lineup, while a healthy Clark Doyle has been able to post several strong wins in the middle of the lineup.
Virginia is 5-4 on the season, but it made a big statement in December with a 5-4 win over Cornell.
The undefeated Princeton women moved to third in the national poll following a perfect start to the season, including a win over fourth-ranked Stanford, and the Tigers will host 13th-ranked Virginia at 1:30 pm. Like the men, the Tiger women have received a huge infusion of talent from the Class of 2021; the Princeton freshmen are 14-0 so far this season, including a perfect 4-0 mark for Raneem El Torky at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Grace Doyle made her debut in the final match, a win over Drexel, to give head coach Gail Ramsay a sense of what her lineup could look like fully healthy.
Sunday's match will be the final tune-up before a Thursday afternoon showdown with Trinity next week; the Bantams are currently ranked No. 2 nationally.
The Virginia women are 3-5 on the season.
