Princeton Sweeps First-Place Showdown With Cornell
October 12, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team has grown accustomed to holding the top spot in the Ivy League standings, and the Tigers had no interest in giving that up against one of the two other teams that entered Friday in a first-place tie. Playing in front of its home crowd after a long road trip last weekend, Princeton grabbed control early and posted a 3-0 sweep of Cornell to move to 5-1 in Ivy League play.
Junior Devon Peterkin, a two-time Ivy League Player of the Week already this season, led all players with 16 kills, and she added six digs and a block in the 25-21, 25-17, 25-17 victory over the Big Red. Sophomore middle Clare Lenihan added 11 kills without an error (.579), and also had two blocks, two digs and an ace in the win. Maggie O'Connell added seven kills, while Caroline Sklaver recorded six kills and four blocks.
The offense ran smoothly through All-Ivy setter Jessie Harris; the Ivy League assists leader had 37 in the match and paced an offense that hit .352 for the match. Harris added seven digs in a balanced defensive performance; both Alexa Underwood and Cameron Dames had team-high nine digs, while Lauren Flaming added eight.
Princeton, which remains in a first-place tie with Yale after the Bulldogs' 3-0 home win over Dartmouth, will try to complete the first half of the Ivy season in style Saturday when it hosts Columbia at 5 pm. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
