First-Place Friday Showdown With Cornell Highlights Key Home Weekend
October 10, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Three of the four teams with winning records in the Ivy League will play in Dillon Gym this weekend, and two of the three teams tied for first place in the league will open that weekend Friday at 7 pm in a showdown on ESPN+. Both Princeton and Cornell enter the weekend with matching 4-1 records (as does Yale), and they will open play looking to stay atop the standings entering Saturday's matches.

Princeton (11-5, 4-1 Ivy) split a road pair last weekend, which started with a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth. The Tigers never found their rhythm Saturday night, and Harvard took advantage by handing them their first loss of the Ivy season. Still, Princeton enters the weekend ranking atop the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.233), assists (12.95), and kills (13.71), and it has three of the Ivy League's Top 10 kill leaders in Ivy play. Junior Devon Peterkin ranks second on that list with 4.0 kills per set, and she'll go head-to-head with the only player above her on Friday, Cornell's Carla Sganderlla (4.85).
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Maggie O'Connell is the only player to rank in the Top 4 in both kills (4th, 3.75) and hitting percentage (2nd, .416) in Ivy League play, and she was dominant in Princeton's last home weekend, a sweep of Brown and Yale two weeks ago. Her 21-kill effort against Yale helped her earn the Ivy League Player of the Week award. Like Peterkin, she will see the only player above her in hitting percentage this Friday, Cornell's Jenna Phelps (.443).
Cornell (9-6, 4-1 Ivy) split its season pair with Princeton last year, and it opened league play this season with three straight home wins. Columbia (9-6, 3-2) is only match behind the first-place trio, so a perfect weekend would have the Lions right in the heart of the league race when the second half of the league season begins the following week. The Lions are led by one of the Ivy's most dominant players, junior Chichi Ikwuazom, who ranks in the Ivy Top 5 in kills, hitting percentage, and blocks.
