Tigers End Deep Run at ITA Regional
October 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Damian Rodriguez and Ryan Seggerman ended their runs at the ITA Northeast Regional Monday in Jadwin Gym with Rodriguez and Seggerman reaching the doubles semifinals and Rodriguez finishing in the singles quarters.
"Though we're a bit disappointed we didn't advance anyone to the finals, we had a very strong tournament overall," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We were a bit unlucky in some situations this weekend and simply didn't win a couple key points. However, I'm especially proud of the younger guys. Will Peters had a breakout performance and was a point away from beating the No. 2 seed. It was unfortunate Karl Poling had to withdraw with illness. He was really playing well and picking up momentum. Top to bottom, we're playing well and competing hard, but there's some small items we will address to get by these close matches. We're looking forward to getting back to work and the next competition over fall break."
Rodriguez and Seggerman took their chance against the nation's eighth-ranked pair of Jack Lin and William Matheson of Columbia, who had defeated Princeton's duo of Justin Barki and Bill Duo in the quarterfinals the day before, but the Lion pair moved on to the finals with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Rodriguez then battled Harvard's 112th-ranked Andy Zhou in the quarterfinals, pushing the first set to a tiebreak before Zhou advanced, 7-6(5), 6-2.
The Tiger pair's run was Princeton's deepest since Luke Gamble '18 and Alex Day '17 made the semifinals in 2016, and Rodriguez was Princeton's first singles quarterfinalist since Diego Vives '18 in 2015.
