Gyore Elevated to Associate Head Fencing Coach
October 05, 2018 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Szilvia Gyore, who has helped Princeton to 11 Ivy League titles and an NCAA title during her time with the Tiger fencing program, has been elevated to Associate Head Coach.
"When I first came to Princeton twelve years ago, there was one person whom I wanted to work with as my foil coach," Princeton head coach Zoltan Dudas said. "I knew Szilvia back in Hungary and saw her immense potential as a foil coach. When she moved from Hungary to New York, her phenomenal reputation followed her and she continued to grow and learn. Working by her side these past twelve years, I have seen her impart her wisdom, both off and on the fencing strip, to class after class of students. Szilvia has a unique talent to bring out the best in each student, to develop his or her own unique skills set, and that has been reflected in the numerous first-team All-Ivy and All-America fencers as well as Ivy League champion and NCAA champion teams that we have had. It is a pleasure working with Szilvia, and I look forward to pushing each other and our team in the years to come."
Gyore has worked with Dudas since he was hired in 2006, and in the 12 years she has been at Princeton, the Tiger men's and women's fencing teams have combined for 11 of their 26 all-time Ivy League titles, with seven on the women's side and four for the men's team.
Gyore has worked with Princeton's foilists since joining the staff, and in her time with Princeton, Tiger foilists have earned 21 All-America honors out of 39 NCAA finals berths, a group that includes the program's first two four-time All-America honoree in the weapon, Alexander Mills '12 and Eve Levin '14. Both advanced to the NCAA semifinals during their career. Princeton foilists have earned 28 All-Ivy League honors during Gyore's time with the program.
After coming to the U.S. from Hungary in 2000, Gyore coached at the high school and club levels before coming to Princeton. She is a 1995 graduate of Semmelweis University in Budapest.
