O'Toole Named Ivy League Player of the Year; Barlow Coach of the Year
November 14, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Sophomore Kevin O'Toole has been named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in men's soccer it was announced by the league office on Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Jim Barlow captured Ivy League Coach of the Year honors, while nine total players earned all-Ivy League honors.
O'Toole is the seventh Tiger in program history to earn the honors (Thomas Sanner 2015, Cameron Porter 2014, Antoine Hoppenot 2010, Darren Spicer 2004, Michael Nugent 2001, Jim Barlow 1990). He led the league in scoring with 11 points in seven games, averaging 1.57 points per game. He tallied four goals and three assists. O'Toole had a goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw with Dartmouth, had another three-point game with a goal and an assist versus Brown and had a personal-best five-point match with two goals and one assist against Harvard. He was also named first-team All-Ivy League.
Falling behind 2-0 in its league opener against Dartmouth the Tigers rallied for the tie and then captured five straight wins before a one-goal loss at Yale in the finale. This is Princeton's ninth Ivy League title and fifth under Jim Barlow - who is the only coach in the league to earn Rookie, Player and now Coach of the Year honors during his career.
Sophomore back Richard Wolf and senior forward Sean McSherry earned first-team honors, along with O'Toole.
Playing in just three games before the Ivy League season began, Wolf started in every Ivy League match. He's a member of the defense that allowed just five goals in league play and kept teams to just 9.6 shots per game. Wolf was a second-team selection a year ago.
The Tigers' leading scorer McSherry collected six of his 12 points in the Ivy League. He had a goal at Columbia, an assist versus Yale and had a hand in both goals at Cornell. McSherry was a second-team pick in 2016.
Senior Jeremy Colvin and sophomore midfielder Gaby Paniagua earned second-team honors.
Colvin had two goals in Ivy League action - both game winners - against Columbia and Penn. He had five goals this season - all game-winners. This is his second consecutive second-team honor.
Paniagua tallied three goals in conference matches, against Brown, Harvard and Cornell, and has nine points overall.
Earning places on the honorable mention team include junior defenders Cole Morokhovich, Bobby Hickson and Benjamin Issroff as well as goalkeeper Jacob Schachner.
All three defenders helped the team to best goals against average in the league at 0.68 with just five goals allowed in seven league matches. The Tiger defense gave up just 9.6 shots per game this season - allowing the offense to put up 17.9 shots per game.
Schachner led the league in goals against average with a 0.68 GAA with a league-best three shutouts. He was third in the league in save percentage at .773. This is his second honorable mention nod.
The 2018 Ivy League Champion Princeton faces Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN2Go.
