Heartbreaking Finish as Princeton Falls in PKs at NCAA Tournament
November 15, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Shootout Results
Michigan: 23/N 9/Y 3/Y 11/N 14/Y 25/Y 16/Y 19/Y 24/Y 23/Y 9/N 3/Y 25/Y
Princeton: 6/Y 33/N 19/Y 10/Y 3/N 17/Y 7/Y 28/Y 8/Y 6/Y 33/N 19/Y 10/N
It couldn't have been a more dramatic finish. Tied at 1-1 at the regulation, neither Princeton nor Michigan would find a golden goal in 20-minutes of overtime leaving the game in the hands of penalty kicks.
Even more dramatic? It took 14 rounds - nine past the typical five - to determine that it would be Michigan advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to face No. 7 Notre Dame.
Michigan goalkeeper Henry Mashburn came up with the stop in the 14th round on Danny Hampton, who had scored in the fourth round.
Junior Jacob Schachner made saves on the first and fourth PKs, and had one save during the 110-minute session.
Princeton's midfield was tremendous at keeping Michigan from threading any passes and the defense took care of the rest. In all Michigan was limited to just seven shots in the game and two shots on goal.
Senior Benjamin Martin put the Tigers on the board in the 39th minute with his first goal of the season. Martin came in to help Colvin during a counter attack and put the ball into the opposite corner past Mashburn.
Princeton, who ranks fifth nationally in shots, kept up the pressure and looked like it was about to expand its lead.
Senior Sean McSherry had a rip in the 57th get gobbled up by Mashburn and then he teamed up with the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year Kevin O'Toole and senior Jeremy Colvin in the box in the 63rd minute as the trio tried to knock in a pinballing effort. Colvin nearly had his sixth of the season in the 72nd when he took advantage of a bad play by Mashburn, as he came too far off his line to play the ball on the snow covered field.
Michigan was able to sneak in the equalizer during a good 10- minute stretch of the game that wasn't going in the way of the Tigers. Against the run of play, Princeton's Colvin was taken down with no whistle and the Wolverines took advantage with men forward. Noah Kleedtke knocked in a Peter Brown rebound after getting loose in the box.
It was a physical match with 46 fouls (27-19 Princeton) and eight yellow cards (6-2 Michigan).
The Ivy League champion concludes its season with a 10-5-3 overall record.
