Payne Helps Princeton Sprint Past Iona In NWPC Quarterfinal
November 16, 2018 | Men's Water Polo
Senior Matt Payne scored three of his four goals in a first quarter as the Princeton men's water polo team got off to a fast start to put away Iona 16-7 in the quarterfinal round of the NWPC tournament at Brown.
Princeton, the third seed in the tournament, led 7-0 after that first quarter and 11-1 at halftime against the sixth-seeded Gaels. Next up for the Tigers will be Saturday's semifinal against second-seeded St. Francis (N.Y.) at 3 (ESPN+).
Payne, a first-team all-league selection, added a second-quarter goal, giving him 71 for the year, which leaves him in seventh on the program's single-season list, and 236 for his career, two away from fourth-place all-time at Princeton.
Princeton had 10 different players score at least one goal, and Alex Mendelsohn and Mitchell Cooper had two each.
The Tigers improved to 17-10 on the year, and that record includes a 1-1 showing against St. Francis. The Tigers have scored 10 goals both times, losing 12-10 on Oct. 3 in Brooklyn and winning 10-8 in DeNunzio Pool Nov. 4.
The championship game will be Sunday at 12:30, and the winner will advance to the NCAA tournament.
