Princeton Opens the 2018-19 Ivy Season With Victories Over Penn, Cornell In Ithaca

The Princeton women's swimming & diving team opened its 2018-19 Ivy League season in impressive fashion this weekend, as the Tigers swept both Cornell and Penn in a tri-meet in Ithaca, N.Y. Princeton defeated Penn 202-98, and the Tigers defeated Cornell 176-124.
The quartet of Joanna Curry, Jenny Ma, Izzy Reis and Cathy Teng opened Saturday's portions of the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:46.03. Princeton then got early runner-up finishes by Lauren McGrath (200 free, 1:54.23), Stephanie Nelson (100 back, 56.99), and Vivian Wang (100 breast, 1:05.73) to open the individual session of events. Teng added a second-place finish in the 50 free in 24.02, and then she gave Princeton its first individual victory Saturday by taking the 100 free in 52.41. McGrath followed with a second-place finish in 52.82 to score some important team points for the Tigers.
Princeton went 1-2-3 in the 200 back, a trio led off by Nelson's winning time of 2:01.45. Sophomores Regan Barney (2:02.70) and Christie Chong (2:03.27) took the next two spots. Shaelyn Choi followed up with a victory in the 200 breast in 2:22.45.
Elaine Zhou grabbed a win in the 100 fly in 56.02, and then Wang (2:05.47), Barney (2:05.82) and Chong (2:08.82) went 2-3-4 in the 200 IM to close the individual swim events. Reis, Monica McGrath, Lauren McGrath and Curry finished the meet in style, as they combined to win the 400 free relay in 3:29.32.
The meet opened with diving Friday night, and Mimi Lin gave Princeton an early advantage by winning the 1-meter event with 283.80 points. Teammate Natasha MacManus followed up by winning the 3-meter event with 298.10 points.
Princeton will be off for Thanksgiving weekend, and then will head to Providence the following weekend for the three-day Brown Invitational.
