Texas Tech Defeats No. 21 Princeton in NCAA Opener
November 09, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Goals before 15 minutes were gone in each half were the difference as Texas Tech defended home field against No. 21 Princeton Friday night in Lubbock, Texas, 3-0.
Texas Tech will advance to face third-seeded Virginia, which defeated Monmouth 2-0 Friday night in Charlottesville, Thursday. The game will be at second-seeded Baylor if Baylor wins its first-round game Saturday.
The NCAA tournament appearance was Princeton's 13th, and it came with the team's 10th Ivy League title. Finishing the season at 11-4-2, Princeton stood at 1-1-1 in the Ivy three weeks into the league season and won its last four Ivy games, all by shutout, to clinch the league's automatic NCAA bid.
Then, Princeton was ticketed to Lubbock to face Texas Tech for the first time when the bracket was announced Monday.
The Red Raiders got on the board seven minutes into the game when Jade King sent a crossing pass in, and the lead doubled to 2-0 12-and-a-half minutes after the break when Kirsten Davis bodied her way toward goal side-by-side with a Tiger defender and sliced a shot inside the right post. Charlotte Teeter added to the lead with 24 minutes left in the game.
Texas Tech, now 14-5-2, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after earning the fourth seed in the Big 12 Tournament and taking regular-season champ Baylor to overtime in the semifinals. It'll be the Red Raiders first trip to the round of 32 since 2015, losing in the first round in 2016 before missing the tournament last season.
