Top seeds Matthew Kolodzik and Patrick Brucki both made their ways to the Midlands semifinals with perfect Saturdays, and they will be joined by freshman teammate Patrick Glory, who put on quite a show in his Midlands debut. That trio powered Princeton to a top-five position after an impressive first day in the Sears Centre Arena.
Princeton has five wrestlers alive in the field heading into Sunday's final day at the 56th Midlands Championships, and the Tigers ended the day in fifth place overall with 62 points. Princeton's highest team finish at Midlands came last year when the team placed eighth, and the Tigers are less than eight points behind both Wisconsin and Northwestern for third place.
Based on seeding, Glory did what was expected on Day 1, but it was his manner of execution that turned heads in Chicago. The Tiger newcomer pinned his first two opponents and then posted a major decision to set a quarterfinal against fifth-seeded and 14th-ranked Travis Piotrowski of Illinois in the quarterfinal. The moment certainly didn't get to Glory, who put Piotrowski to his back twice in the opening period and finished off a 16-1 technical fall early in the second period.
Glory moved to 13-1 with the win, and his next match will come against reigning NCAA champion Spencer Lee, the only wrestler to post a win over Glory this season. That came via technical fall in the season-opening dual inside Carver Hawkeye Arena last month; the rematch will open Session 3 Sunday at 1 pm ET, 12 pm local; you can watch every match live on FloWrestling.
While Glory saw little drama on Day 1, Kolodzik needed a late flurry to keep his perfect season intact. After two dominant wins, the top-ranked wrestler at 149 found himself trailing Arizona State's Jacori Teemer with less than 40 seconds remaining in the match. A late takedown helped force overtime, and the two-time All-American showed veteran poise in the extra session to claim a 4-2 win. He wasn't interested in quarterfinal drama and used a quick takedown in the first and another in the third to claim a 5-2 win over Henry Pohlmeyer of South Dakota State.
Kolodzik will now face fifth-seeded Patrick Lugo of Iowa. Lugo upset Kolodzik at the 2017 Midlands Championships, but the two-time Princeton All-American avenged that match in the season-opening dual in Iowa with a reversal and takedown in the third period of a 7-4 victory.
Brucki improved to 15-0 on the season with four fairly comfortable victories Saturday, the closest of which was a 10-5 win over ninth-seeded Andre Lee of Illinois in the quarterfinal. That win set up a potential EIWA championship showdown with sixth-ranked Rocco Caywood of Army; those two did not meet last season. If Brucki gets that victory, it will be his fourth win already this season against opponents ranked in the latest InterMat Top 15.
Both Quincy Monday and Kevin Parker also reached the quarterfinal rounds, but both suffered close losses to fall into the consolation round. Monday sent quick shockwaves into the arena when he scored a quick takedown on top-seeded Ryan Deakin, who is currently ranked #2 nationally out of the host Northwestern Wildcats. He nearly pulled off another later in the period, though Deakin fought it off and used a strong ride in the second period to gain control in an eventual 6-2 win.
Parker fell to Wisconsin's Mason Reinhart in a battle of two of the top six seeds in the field. Reinhart, who won the first meeting between the two in a home dual, grabbed the early lead, but a third-period reversal by Parker drew the Princeton junior to a 3-3 tie. Reinhart escaped to lead 4-3 and then fended off all remaining shots to secure a 4-3 win.
