Princeton Rally Falls Short In 160-140 Loss At Columbia
December 07, 2018 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Despite a strong push in the second half of the meet, the Princeton women's swimming and diving team dropped its first Ivy League meet of the season at the Uris Natatorium in New York City. Columbia grabbed an early lead and held on for a 160-140 victory.
The Lions picked up wins in each of the first eight events, but a 1-meter diving victory by Sophia Peifer opened a stretch of five wins in six events for Princeton that got the Tigers right back into the meet. Cathy Teng grabbed a win in the 100 free (51.27), and Stephanie Nelson continued her strong run through the 2018 portion of the season by taking the 200 back in 2:02.06. Junior Shaelyn Choi kept the momentum going by winning the 200 breast in 2:21.10, and classmate Elaine Zhou followed by winning the 100 fly in 57.07.
Columbia was able to hold off Princeton in a pair of closely contested final events to hold on for the 20-point win. You can find the complete results here.
"I'm really proud of our toughness on the back half of today's meet," head coach Bret Lundgaard said. "Our student-athletes did a nice job refocusing and taking advantage of some competitive opportunities. Unfortunately, it was just a little too short and that's a testament to Columbia's awesome competitiveness today."
Princeton will be off through the rest of 2018, and it will return for a pair of meets during the second weekend of January. The Tigers will open Friday in an afternoon meet at Rutgers, and then they will welcome Rutgers and Villanova the following day for an 11 am meet on ESPN+.
