Eye on the Tigers
Princeton won its season opener at Temple 17-4 last Saturday afternoon. The Tigers remain No. 9 in the IWLCA poll and No. 12 in the Cascade Media poll. Four players had multiple-point games including freshman Kyla Sears who had four goals and two assists in her first game. Sophomore Tess D'Orsi scored five times, and junior Kathryn Hallett had four goals. Senior Julia Haney added two goals. Senior midfielder Ellie McNulty pulled down six draws with Sears winning four. McNulty along with freshman defender Mary Murphy had four ground balls apiece. Murphy was named the Ivy League Defender of the Week with her four ground balls, two caused turnovers and helping to hold the Temple offense to four goals, way off of its 15 gpg average. Senior Mary Kate McDonough earned the win in goal making four saves. Freshman Sam Fish saw action in goal in the final 16 minutes to earn experience as well.
The Series
The series between Princeton and Virginia is tied at 18-18 since the first meeting on May 20, 1989. The Tigers have won the last two meetings, a 17-10 win in Charlottesville last season and a 14-7 game here in Princeton in 2016. UVa's last win was an 18-11 game in Charlottesville in 2015. The rivalry between the two orange squads is solid, with the teams facing off nine times in the NCAA Tournament, twice in the national championship, and five of those games ending in one-goal decisions.
Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia, ranked No. 16 in the IWLCA poll, is 2-0 on the season with a dominant 17-4 win over Elon and a 15-7 game against Richmond this past Wednesday night. This will be the Cavaliers first game on the road this season. Both Sammy Mueller and Maggie Jackson have nine points, with Mueller scoring seven times and adding two assists and Jackson scoring five times with a team-high four assists. Kasey Behr follows with seven goals. The three players are also the leaders in draw controls, winning 21 of the team's 27 draws. Behr has a team-high three caused turnovers and Jackson has a team-best six ground balls. Rachel Vander Kolk has started in both games and has a 5.56 GAA and a .656 save percentage making 21 saves on 32 shots.
