Princeton Welcomes Back Historic '98 Team During Crucial Saint Francis/Penn State Home Weekend
February 28, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
As the Princeton men's volleyball team approaches arguably the biggest weekend of its regular season, head coach Sam Shweisky couldn't have found a better example for his team of what possibilities are out there in the EIVA.
Princeton, which picked up its first league win of the season last Saturday against Sacred Heart, will welcome both St. Francis (Friday) and reigning EIVA champion Penn State (Saturday) for a pair of home matches this weekend. Both matches will begin at 7 pm inside Dillon Gym, where admission is free to all home matches, and both will also be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
As the Tigers try to claw their way back into playoff contention following an 0-4 league start, they will be joined Saturday by the only Princeton men's team to ever climb all the way to the top of the EIVA mountain. The 1998 squad will be on hand to unveil its "Final Four" banner and celebrate its historic run to the NCAA Championships on the 20th anniversary of claiming Princeton's only Eastern title.
WEEKEND LINKS
Princeton's win over Sacred Heart Saturday left the Tigers two matches out of the critical #4 spot, though there is still more than half the league season to play. Still, every weekend provides an opportunity to make up ground, and the Tigers would love nothing more than to build a winning streak over this five-match homestand.
The Tigers will open the weekend Friday night at Saint Francis, a team it played two absolute classics against last season. Princeton got 19 kills from Greg Luck in the home match, which ended with a 16-14 Tiger win in the fifth set. Despite 11 kills from eventual EIVA Newcomer of the Year George Huhmann in the rematch, the Red Flash returned the favor with a 15-13 home win later in the season.
Princeton and Penn State played three times last season, including the EIVA semifinal, and the two regular-season matches were also memorable. Princeton held match ball in both contests — the 2017 Tigers were the first Princeton team to push Penn State to five sets in State College since 1998 — but Penn State fought them off both nights and managed five-set wins in both. The league semifinal was tight through the first half of the match, though Penn State was able to pull away en route to winning another EIVA title.
