Princeton Opens EIVA Play With Weekend Pair In Charleston
February 07, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
Men's volleyball coach Sam Shweisky knew he had a youth-filled roster heading into the 2018 season, and he wanted to make sure the Tigers were tested before they entered EIVA this coming weekend.
Mission accomplished.
Princeton has played eight matches this season, and every single one of them was against a team that has been ranked inside the AVCA Top 15 at some point this season. The Tigers have played the majority of their matches without two-time All-EIVA middle Junior Oboh, and they are working a freshman setter into a rotation that still uses as many as four underclassman hitting options at different points.
Princeton (1-7, 0-0 EIVA) heads to Charleston, W.V., this weekend ready to build on the early lessons of the 2018 season. The Tigers have been able to put together a fairly balanced offense, with their top three sophomore options all averaging more than 2.0 kills per set. Reigning EIVA Newcomer of the Year George Huhmann leads the Tigers with 2.96 kills per set — fifth-most in the EIVA — and he also leads the team with nearly .8 of a block per set.
Classmates Greg Luck (2.37) and Parker Dixon (2.15) continue to provide firepower from the outside, while freshman Jess Hunt has shown signs of his talent in recent matches. That offense is growing around newcomer Joe Kelly, who is third in the EIVA with 8.37 assists per set.
Charleston (3-1, 0-0 EIVA) has been led by Max Senica, who ranks fourth in the EIVA with 3.0 kills per set. The Golden Eagles have two other players averaging more than 2.0 kills per set, including Ryan Santos, who helped Charleston push Princeton to five sets last season with 14 kills inside Dillon Gym.
This is Charleston's third season in the EIVA, and while the Golden Eagles have yet to win a league match, they proved to be a more competitive opponent in 2017 than their first season. Unlike the rest of the league, Charleston doesn't play the standard home-and-away series with each EIVA opponent. Due to their location and no natural travel partner, it will host a team for two matches during a weekend one season, and then play two road matches the following season. This season, Princeton travels to Charleston, so the Tigers will play Friday at 7 pm, and Saturday at 7:30.
