Barmann, Johnson Win NCAA Regional Titles
March 10, 2018 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Sophomore Samuel Barmann and junior Wesley Johnson each won his weapon at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South regional Saturday at Lafayette.
Barmann finished first of 36 men's foil competitors and Johnson led 36 men's épée fencers. The title was the first at the NCAA regional for each Tiger.
Rookie Tatijana Stewart took bronze in épée to lead the Tiger women.
The regional counts for 60 percent of a fencer's NCAA selection résumé while regular-season performance counts for the other 40 percent. Five of the six weapons, except women's foil, have seven NCAA spots allocated from the Mid-Atlantic/South region, with women's foil getting six. Teams can qualify a maximum 12 fencers, two per weapon, for the NCAA Championships, with each of those fencers competing in 23 bouts and each of those wins adding a point to the team's standing in pursuit of the combined men's/women's team title.
The NCAA Championships will be held March 22-25 at Penn State, and the full list of NCAA Championships participants will be announced Tuesday.
