Sophomore Maia Chamberlain is tops among Tigers after the first day at the NCAA fencing championships at Penn State.
Chamberlain stands third among the 24 saber fencers, winning 11 of her 15 bouts. The top four fencers in each weapon will move on to Friday afternoon's weapon finals, where the NCAA individual women's champions will be decided. With eight pool bouts for each fencer to come Friday, Karolina Cieslar of St. John's leads the sabers with 13 wins, one in front of Penn State's Zara Moss and two in front of a group of three fencers that includes Chamberlain. Ties are broken on touch differential, and Chamberlain is at +26 after one day. Fellow saber senior Allison Lee is 13th with eight wins.
Sophomore Kasia Nixon stands sixth in épée with 10 wins, one behind Ohio State's Emma von Dadelszen and Harvard's Cindy Gao for fourth and fifth. Freshman Tatijana Stewart is ninth with eight wins.
Notre Dame and Columbia are tied atop the team leaderboard with 56 wins apiece, with Penn State third at 52, Ohio State fourth at 51, St. John's fifth at 43, Harvard sixth at 30 and Princeton seventh at 37 among the 24 schools with women competing.
Competition will start at 9 a.m. Friday for the completion of the pool bouts before the individual championship competition begins at 1:30 p.m., streamed on ESPN3. The men's competition will run Saturday and Sunday, and the team title will be decided over the entire four-day run.
