Hallisey Scores with 9.5 Seconds Left and Princeton is Heading to Lake Placid
March 10, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior David Hallisey scored with 9.5 seconds left to lift Princeton to a 3-2 win over Union in Game 2 of the ECAC Quarterfinals to sweep the Dutchmen and advance to the ECAC Tournament Championship! This is Princeton's first trip to the ECAC finals since 2009.
Â
It was a tale of two periods and after 40 minutes the teams were tied at 2-2. With a pretty even battle in the third period and time winding down, it was coming down to next goal wins.
Â
The next goal came with 9.5 seconds left. Princeton had a 3-on-1 break with junior Josh Teves putting a shot on Kupsky on the left side getting his own rebound back and cycling behind the goal to find Hallisey open on the right side and he lofted the game winner gloveside on Kupsky.
Â
Princeton owned the first period scoring twice and having a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. Junior Alex Riche scored his sixth goal of the first after picking up a breakout pass from Max Véronneau and then firing over the left shoulder of Kupky at 14:44. Teves was credited with the secondary assist.
Â
Senior Eric Robinson made it 2-0 at 18:49 with a short-handed goal from classmate Joe Grabowski. It was Princeton's first short-handed goal since Feb. 20, 2015 when Kevin Liss had one against Brown.
Â
Union claimed the second period, with two goals and a 15-4 shots on goal advantage. Princeton had an early second-period power-play advantage but came up empty. The Dutchmen converted on their next power-play opportunity at 7:53 when Anthony Rinaldi fired in a shot from the right face-off circle that gleamed off the glove of netminder Ryan Ferland and into the back of the net. Less than two minutes later Ryan Walker knotted it up with he went for a backdoor and beat freshman netminder Ryan Ferland before he could slide in time.
Â
The Tigers had a chance to get one back when it had a five-minute power play on a checking from behind and game misconduct call on Luc Brown. Union continued to battle and successfully killed off the major and maintained momentum.
Â
Ferland made 29 saves as Union finished with a 31-22 shots on goal advantage.
Â
Kupsky stopped 19 shots before being pulled for the extra skater for the final fruitless seconds.
Â
Princeton's Class of 2018 now has the same number of postseason victories this season than they had wins as freshmen.
