Tigers Qualify Nine to NCAA Championships
March 13, 2018 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
The Princeton fencing teams have qualified nine fencers to the combined NCAA Championships next week at Penn State, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
Qualification depends on a combination of regular-season results and the outcome of the NCAA regionals, held last weekend. Junior épée Wesley Johnson and sophomore foil Samuel Barmann were both NCAA regional champs, and both have earned bids to the NCAA finals. The complete list of Tiger qualifiers is below.
The maximum number of fencers a team can qualify is 12, and each of those 12 fencers has 22 or 23 chances (since a pair of teammates in each weapon compete once) to claim a point toward his or her team's total by winning a bout against each of the 23 other fencers in his or her weapon. The maximum number of points a team can score at the NCAA finals is 270, but since the NCAA added women's saber to the championships in 2000, the winning number has been between 165 and 195.
Columbia, defending champ Notre Dame and Ohio State were the only schools to qualify a maximum 12. Princeton finished fourth last year and is the only school to bring home a top-four trophy in each of the last seven years.
A full NCAA Championships preview will be posted on GoPrincetonTigers.com next week. The full list of NCAA qualifiers can be found here.
