Princeton Takes on Cornell in ECAC Hockey Championship Semifinal

EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton is 17-12-4 on the season and receiving nine votes in the latest USCHO poll. The Tigers swept both Brown and Union to reach the ECAC Championship weekend. The Tigers, with the third best scoring offense in the nation, are led by juniors Max Véronneau and Ryan Kuffner who each have 50-point seasons. Véronneau has 53 points on 16 goals and 37 assists. His 37 assists in 33 games ranks him tops in the nation in assists per game. Kuffner has 50 points on 29 goals and 21 assists and ranks second in the nation in goals per game. Sophomore Jackson Cressey follows with 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points while senior David Hallisey has 17 goals and 19 assists for 36 points. Junior defenseman Josh Teves has 31 points to lead the nation's defensemen in scoring, on six goals and 25 assists. Senior Eric Robinson is one point away from 30 with 15 goals and 14 assists. Freshman Ryan Ferland has started in all but one game in goal and has a .911 save percentage and a 3.01 goals against average. He's made 30+ saves in 16 games this season.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell is ranked No. 2 in the latest USCHO poll with a 25-4-2 overall record. The Big Red are the top seed in the ECAC after a 17-3-2 league season. Cornell swept Quinnipiac to earn its way to Lake Placid, outscoring the Bobcats 11-1. The Big Red are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games with the most recently loss being a 4-3 decision to Union in the regular-season finale. Junior Anthony Angello (PIT) leads the offense with 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists, and he has five game winners. Senior Trevor Yates adds 24 points and senior Alex Rauter and junior Mitch Vanderlaan have 20 points apiece. Cornell has the best scoring defense in the nation, holding teams to 1.84 goals per game, while scoring 3.23 goals per game to rank 10th. Freshman Matthew Galajda has started in 27 of 31 games in goal and has a 1.43 GAA and a .943 save percentage. Senior Hayden Stewart has played in seven games as the backup.
THE PRINCETON/CORNELL SERIES
Cornell is 90-54-8 against Princeton in the all-time series that dates back to 1900-01. The Big Red have won the last seven meetings. In the first meeting, on Nov. 4, Princeton had a 3-2 lead before Cornell pulled Matthew Galajda after the first period. The Big Red went on to tie it up 4-4 in the second before Brenden Locke scored the game winner in the third. In the second meeting, Cornell won a lopsided 7-1 game at Lynah Rink on Jan. 5. Princeton does have the edge over Cornell in neutral site meetings, 11-5.
MEETING IN THE PLAYOFFS
Princeton and Cornell are meeting in the ECAC Tournament for the first time since 2013. The teams have played 10 times in the tournament, with Cornell holding a 7-2-1 record.
HOW WE GOT HERE
Princeton swept Brown in the first round, outscoring the Bears 15-3. Princeton set a program record for goals in a playoff game, surpassing the six it had against Cornell in 1999. The Tigers went on to sweep No. 2 seed Union, ranked No. 16 nationally, in the quarterfinals. They marked Princeton's first win over Union since 2009, and first win at Messa Rink since 2008.
