UNLV, Grand Canyon Top Princeton on Tigers' Season-Opening Day

UNLV defeated Princeton 7-1 and host Grand Canyon topped the Tigers 6-2 in the first of two games on the Princeton softball team's season-opening Friday in Phoenix.
Against UNLV, Princeton took the lead in the third inning when Alex Viscusi picked up a Kaitlyn Waslawski single on an RBI groundout, but the Rebels scored three times in the bottom of the third on a bases-clearing double from Justine Federe.
UNLV added to the lead with a run in the fourth with a Brooke Stover RBI single, and the Rebels pushed the lead to 7-1 in the fifth on a walk and four hits, including one from Federe to give her four RBIs for the day.
Janine Petmecky went the distance for UNLV, giving up three hits and a walk while fanning eight, while Ashley LaGuardia took the loss for Princeton in four innings of work before Caroline Taber threw two innings of relief.
Against Grand Canyon, Princeton again took the lead, this time in the first inning when Keeley Walsh picked up a leadoff single from Megan Donahey with a two-out base hit of her own, but Grand Canyon scored three times in the bottom of the first and never gave back the lead. Niki Gonzalez had the big hit in the first with a two-run home run, and Shea Smith had a two-run single in the second to push the Antelope lead to 5-1. GCU's final run came in the sixth when Jordon Keeton had a two-out RBI single.
Kylee Pierce brought home a Joey Smith single with a base hit of her own for Princeton's final run in the seventh.
Rookie Allie Reynolds threw all six innings for Princeton and Alexa Coons went all seven for GCU, giving up four hits.
Princeton will play two again Saturday, facing South Dakota at 1:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. local time (live stats) before meeting GCU again at 6:30 ET (live stats | video).Â
