5 Tigers Earn All-Ivy; Kolodzik, D'Angelo Repeat On 1st Team
March 20, 2018 | Wrestling
Sophomore All-American Matthew Kolodzik and NCAA qualifier Mike D'Angelo led a cast of five Princeton wrestlers who claimed 2018 All-Ivy League honors, it was announced by the league office following a vote by the Ivy head coaches. Both Kolodzik and D'Angelo repeated as first-team selections, while Jonathan Schleifer (second), Patrick Brucki (second), and Matteo DeVincenzo (honorable mention) were also honored.
Kolodzik, who capped a historic weekend by finishing third at the 2018 NCAA Championships, went 29-6 during his sophomore season and returned to the All-American podium, albeit at a higher spot. He went 4-1 against Ivy League opponents, repeated as an EIWA champion, and then defeated the #2, #3, #4, and #6 seeds for Princeton's highest finish at the NCAA Championships since Greg Parker '03 reached the 2002 final. Kolodzik, the 2017 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, is the first Princeton wrestler since 1984, and only the fourth in program history, to be first-team All-Ivy as a freshman and sophomore; the other three were Keith Ely, John Orr, and Dave Crisanti.
D'Angelo returned to the All-Ivy first team after going 23-10 on the season, and 3-0 within the Ivy League. His biggest Ivy victory came in a 2-1 sudden victory win over Columbia's Markus Scheidel, the #10 seed at the NCAA Championships. D'Angelo had one of the most consistent seasons on the roster; he went 10-10 against wrestlers who qualified to the NCAA Championships, including Top-20 wins over Scheidel and Old Dominion's Larry Early.
Schleifer earned All-Ivy League recognition for the fourth straight season, and he made the second team twice (2015, 2018); he also became Princeton's first Ivy League Rookie of the Year (2015) in team history. Schleifer went 3-2 in the league, including an overtime loss to first-team selection May Bethea, though he defeated Bethea at both Midlands and the EIWA Championships; in both events, the Princeton co-captain reached the finals. Schleifer ended his senior season with 16 wins, and he capped his remarkable time at Princeton with 82 career victories.
While Scheifer's time at Princeton comes to end, Brucki's career got off to an impressive start with 28 wins and a berth in the NCAA Championships. The Tiger freshman went 4-1 in the Ivy League, including a 3-2 win over 2017 EIWA champion Frank Mattiace of Penn, and he upset 16th-seeded Christian Brunner of Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Championships. Brucki had seven wins over NCAA qualifiers during the year, and his only Ivy loss came to All-American Ben Darmstadt of Cornell in a tight 10-6 match.
DeVincenzo claimed his first All-Ivy League honor after going 3-2 in league competition and placing eighth at the EIWA Championships. It was the second straight podium finish for the Tiger sophomore, who won 12 matches during the season.
