Penn Tops Princeton in Ivy League Opener
March 31, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Penn took the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to defeat the Princeton men's tennis team 6-1 Saturday in Philadephia in the league-opening match for both teams.
Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman won on the second doubles court, but Penn took the other two contests to win the afternoon's first point. Holden also supplied Princeton's lone singles win, defeating Noah Makarome 6-2, 6-3 on court six to pull Princeton within 2-1 on the day. Penn, though, took the remaining singles matches to claim the win.
"Highly disappointing outcome today at Penn," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We underperformed in terms of what our level should be and Penn played a very good match. Quite simply, we needed to be better and be tougher. We really let the doubles point get away after having leads, and that was followed by a couple of singles where we didn't get our teeth into the match. We'll regroup and be ready for Cornell on Friday at home."
Princeton will split sites next weekend, following that Friday home match against Cornell with a trip to Columbia Sunday.
