Princeton Outlasts Cornell in Ivy Home Opener
April 06, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Opening a weekend against a pair of ITA top-50 opponents, the Princeton men's tennis team outlasted 47th-ranked Cornell 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center.
"I'm very proud of our guys for bouncing back strong this week after a disappointing match last week," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "As always seems to be the case with Cornell, the match was a battle and about as close as it could be. Similar to our match earlier with them at the ECAC, it came down to the last match and we needed guys to step up at the right moment, which they did. Ryan (Seggerman) was dominant early but dug a hole for himself down 0-3 in the third. From that point, he played more aggressive tennis and was able to get to the net and force the issue against a very strong player. We'll have a good day of practice tomorrow and prepare for a good opportunity on Sunday at Columbia."
Princeton won the doubles point, following a win from Kial Kaiser and Diego Vives at third doubles with a 7-6 win by Luke Gamble and Damian Rodriguez at first. Princeton then split the first four singles matches off court, with Davey Roberts and Gamble getting wins to stay ahead 3-2, but Cornell squared the match with a three-set win at sixth. Seggerman then had the clincher, winning six straight games to battle back and take the third set and the match.
Princeton's match Sunday at No. 15 (ITA)/18 (USTA) Columbia is set for a 1 p.m. start and will be streamed on the Ivy League Network. Twitter updates will be available at @PtonMensTennis.
