2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Bracket
Ten days after the Princeton women's tennis team locked up its place in the 2018 NCAA team tournament, the Tigers learned their NCAA destination.
Princeton will head to Lubbock, Texas, to face Illinois, which stands 21-5 overall and 9-3 in the Big Ten after making the Big Ten tournament semifinals. Host Texas Tech, the 11th seed overall, will open against Patriot League champion Army West Point. Princeton and Illinois will meet at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET Friday with the winners playing Saturday at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET.
Illinois was ranked 19th in the nation by the ITA as of April 24, while Princeton was ranked 47th and Texas Tech 14th. A new ITA ranking will be out May 3.
The team that emerges from the regional will compete the rest of the way at Wake Forest, the host of the NCAA Championships beginning with the round of 16 and continuing through the finals May 17-22.
It'll be Princeton's eighth NCAA team tournament appearance, six of which have come in the last decade. Princeton had never won an NCAA team tournament match until 2014, when the Tigers beat Arizona State 4-3 and then came within a pair of third sets in a 4-2 loss at Alabama. That began the current run of four NCAAs in five years, which continued with a 4-3 first-round loss to South Carolina at Virginia in 2015 and a 4-1 loss to Georgia Tech at South Carolina in 2016.
Princeton pulled in three All-Ivy League honors while completing a perfect 7-0 Ivy League season, including Laura Granville's third Coach of the Year honors in the four years the award has been given, as well as a unanimous first-team singles honor for senior Katrine Steffensen, her third All-Ivy honor in as many seasons after two straight second-team recognitions, and a second-team all-league singles honor for rookie Stephanie Schrage.
Princeton finished the regular season 19-3 to tie for the second-most wins in a season in program history with the 2014 team (19-6) and behind only the 2010 team (20-6). Regardless of the team's NCAA tournament outcome, the 2018 Tigers will have their fewest losses in a season since the 2000 team went 11-2.
