Ivy Champ Tigers Battle Illinois to Final Point in NCAA Opener
May 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
The doubles point went the Princeton women's tennis team's way, and though Friday's NCAA tournament-opening match against Illinois went the distance, the fourth point went to the Illini as the nation's 19th-ranked team advanced, 4-3.
After wins from Clare McKee and Katrine Steffensen on court two and Sara Goodwin and Nathalie Rodilosso on court three, the Tigers got singles wins from Steffensen, on court one over ITA 74th-ranked Jaclyn Switkes, and Gaby Pollner, on court five, while Illinois won three straight-setters to tie it at 3-3. That left court three as the only match on, with Illinois' Daniela Novak rallying to send it to a third set after Nicole Kalhorn won the opening frame. Novak then took the third set to advance her team, 6-4.
The Tigers' season saw the team win the program's 14th Ivy League title and fourth in the last five years while making the team's eighth NCAA tournament appearance, also the team's fourth in the last five years. Princeton, ranked 24th by the USTA and 47th by the ITA, finished the season at 19-4 with the second-most wins in program history and fewest losses since 2000.
