Walton Leads Tigers as NCAA Regional Comes to a Close
May 09, 2018 | Women's Golf
Sophomore Maya Walton tied for 22nd overall in the 96-player field at the NCAA Regional in San Francisco to lead the Princeton women's golf team as the three-round tournament closed Wednesday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
Walton's 1-over 217 for the week was four shots back of where the NCAA finals individual bids ended up. After Stanford (-8), UCLA (-4), Mississippi (-1), Louisville (E), Kent State (+1) and Colorado (+5) earned their team bids to the NCAA Championships later this month in Oklahoma, the top players not on those teams were California's Marthe Wold (-6), Pepperdine's Hira Naveed (-5), North Carolina State's Laura Kowohl (-3) and Oklahoma State's Emma Broze (-3), with Wold, Naveed and Broze advancing after Broze defeated Kowohl in a playoff.
Princeton cut its score from round to round, carding a 305 in Monday's first round before a 299 and then a 297 Wednesday. The Tigers' season comes to a close after the program's second straight Ivy League title and NCAA Regional bid, and four of Princeton's five regional participants are able to return next year with Tenley Shield as the team's lone senior.
