Zach Currier Named To Canadian National Team For World Championships
June 20, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
The biggest question was whether any Canadians would be competing at the upcoming World Lacrosse Championships next month in Israel. Once that little issue was resolved, there was little question that Zach Currier would be part of the 23-man roster.
The Canadians went pretty much to the last minute before resolving internal issues between the national federation and the players, a situation that threatened to keep the defending champion out of next months' event in Netanyu, Israel. It was announced earlier in the week that those issues had been overcome, and then the roster was announced Wednesday.
To little surprise, that roster included Currier, a 2017 Princeton graduate whose game is basically tailor-made for the international and professional games, with his ability as a two-way midfielder who can also face off.
Currier and the Canadians will look to win a second-straight championship in the FIL tournament, which begins July 12 and runs through July 21. Expect a final between Canada and the U.S., the only two countries who have ever won the championship.
If it comes to that, it would mark the second time in 11 months that Currier would go head-to-head with fellow Princeton alum Tom Schreiber in the final of a major event. Last summer Schreiber's Ohio Machine defeated Currier's Denver Outlaws in the Major League Lacrosse final.
Currier, from Peterborough, Ont., was a dominant and tireless player at Princeton. His senior year was extraordinary was one of the best seasons a college midfielder has ever had, with 24 goals, 34 assists, 130 ground balls, a team-best 27 caused turnovers and a 57 percent winning percentage on face-offs.
Currier has made a smooth transition to the professional game after his college career. He's already a two-time MLL all-star, and he was one of the top rookies in the indoor National Lacrosse League this past season with the Calgary Roughnecks.
