Holmes '17 Wins Gold, Stone '13 Wins Bronze at Senior World Championships
July 25, 2018 | Women's Fencing
On the other side of the globe from Princeton, a pair of Tiger fencing alums are having a successful week at the Senior World Championships in Wuxi, China.
Tuesday, Eliza Stone '13 tied for third in the individual women's saber competition, going 5-1 in pool bouts to earn the 23rd seed in a field of 101. In the knockout rounds, Stone won four times to reach the semifinals, where her run ended against Russia's Sofia Pozdniakova, the eventual champion. Stone was the 2013 NCAA women's saber champion.
Wednesday, Katharine Holmes '17 and the U.S. women's épée team won gold, with Holmes, sisters Courtney and Kelley Hurley, and Amanda Sirico starting with the seventh seed and winning five matches to claim the title. The U.S. upset second-seeded Estonia 24-23 with Holmes taking the last bout and outscoring her opponent 8-6 to get the Americans the win. The U.S. then beat Russia in the semifinals, 27-25, with Holmes again turning a deficit into a lead, outscoring her match-ending foe 13-10. That set up a final against South Korea, and Holmes again was the closer, turning a two-touch deficit into an 18-17 win by outscoring her opponent 8-5. Holmes was the 2017 NCAA women's épée runner-up in an all-Princeton final against Anna Van Brummen '17.
