Princeton Stays Perfect With 8-1 Win Over Penn, Sets Up Unbeaten Showdown vs. Harvard
January 30, 2019 | Women's Squash
A dominant performance coming out of the exam break by the top-ranked Princeton women's squash team means the battle of unbeatens is set for Saturday at the Jadwin Squash Courts. Princeton, coming off a pair of 5-4 thrillers over both Trinity and Yale prior to finals, took care of business in impressive fashion Wednesday night with an 8-1 win over the fifth-ranked Quakers.
Princeton, which gained the #1 ranking in the nation due to the strength of schedule points it gained from the win at Trinity, will face reigning Howe Cup and Ivy League champion Harvard Saturday at the Jadwin Squash Courts in the second half of a doubleheader; the men's match with Harvard will take place first at noon. Both will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Tigers, who moved to 10-0 with the win, took control in the opening shift by winning three of the first four matches. Both Elle Ruggiero and Emme Leonard were dominant in 3-0 wins, while freshman Andrea Toth showed impressive resilience in coming back from a 2-1 deficit at the #7 spot. Toth controlled the final two games against Haley Scott and claimed the match with wins of 11-5 and 11-4.
Reigning CSA champion Reeham Sedky picked up Penn's only win with a 3-0 victory over Princeton freshman Bubble Lui at the #1 spot.
Princeton put the match away in dominant fashion during the second shift. Grace Doyle, Samantha Chai, Morgan Steelman and Izzy Hirshberg all earned 3-0 wins to clinch the team victory for Princeton. The late drama took place on Court 1, as sophomore Raneem El Torky bounced back from a 13-11 loss in the second game and defeated Jessica Davis 12-10 and 11-6 to secure the win.
