Purdue Fort Wayne Claims Win Over Princeton
January 05, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
Another terrific offensive performance from the junior duo of George Huhmann and Parker Dixon wasn't enough Saturday night against the 14th-ranked Purdue Fort Wayne Mastadons Saturday night to end the season-opening four-match road trip for Princeton. A second-set comeback and an efficient offensive attack led the hosts to a 3-0 win, the second in a row over an EIVA opponent; Purdue Fort Wayne topped NJIT Friday night as well.
Preseason All-American George Huhmann led Princeton with 14 kills, and he added three blocks, while Dixon finished a terrific opening road trip with 13 kills, six digs, two blocks and a .321 attack percentage. Both Greg Luck and Nate Thompson added six kills apiece for Princeton, while sophomore setter Joe Kelly added 32 assists for Princeton. Jerod Nelsen had a team-high seven digs for Princeton, while both Luck and Dixon has six apiece.
Princeton tested itself during this season-opening stretch, as it played three teams in the AVCA Preseason Top 15, and then the fourth match was against a Ball State that was just outside the Top 15. This is not unchartered territory for the program; Princeton faced a similar early-season schedule last year and opened 1-11, but the Tigers built on those challenges to post a memorable finish, which included a regular-season sweep of Penn State and a semifinal win over top-seeded George Mason in the EIVA postseason.
Princeton will make its way home this week, and then will travel down to Fairfax for a pair of matches against both UC-Irvine and Erskine.
