No. 18 Princeton Secures NWPC Sweep

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 18 Princeton Tigers finished the weekend with a Northeast Water Polo Conference sweep with victories over the Brown Bears (12-9) and the MIT Engineers (9-8).
No. 18 Princeton 12, Brown 9
Princeton ran off the first three goals and four of the first five to take a 5-3 advantage after eight minutes. Brown closed within one, but the Tigers ran off four consecutive goals to finish the first half and led 9-4 at the intermission.
Head coach Dustin Litvak's group held a five-goal lead before Brown posted the final two tallies of the third stanza to close the gap to three (11-8). The Bears registered its ninth goal with four minutes left, but Knez and the Tigers' defense held strong and kept the road squad off the board the rest of the way. Knez recorded 16 saves including seven in the fourth quarter.

A goal with six seconds remaining in the first quarter gave MIT a 2-1 advantage. MIT snagged the first tally of the second stanza and went into the break with a 5-3 lead. The Engineers posted a shutout in the third frame and scored twice, opening up the fourth quarter with a three-tally lead (7-4).
Princeton did not go away as Yurian Quinones and Alec Mendelsohn got the home unit closed the gap to one. Mendelsohn collected the equalizer with 24 seconds to go …
Princeton now sits at 8-9 in 2019 and 2-1 in the conference. Litvak's team heads on the road next Saturday and takes on Iona (10 a.m.) and No. 17 St. Francis-Brooklyn (4 p.m.).
