Tigers Rally to Draw RPI in Baker Opener
November 15, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
Derek Topatigh and Jake Paganelli had third-period goals as Princeton rallied to tie RPI 2-2 Friday night in the home opener in Baker Rink.
The tie came in Princeton's latest home opener since 2010, as the Tigers played their first four games on the road at St. Cloud for a pair and then the ECAC Hockey League opening weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth.
Topatigh's goal was his first of the year and 11th in the senior's career, and it sets up the chance for Princeton to emerge from an ECAC weekend unbeaten for the third time in the last four such weekends dating back to last season.
"Especially being down two, (it's) a big step forward, shows the (team's) character and we're just going to build on this and keep it going tomorrow night," Topatigh said.
RPI got on the board on a goal by Simon Kjellberg seven minutes into the game, and with just 40 seconds left before the first intermission, Ture Linden got the Engineers to a 2-0 lead.
"It was just two miscues that go into the back of the net in the first period, but I thought we still played OK, and then we played a little bit better, but the third period was better with starting to drive the net and we made some line changes in the third period, shifted all four lines to create a little energy, a guy like (Joey) Fallon up on the third line, and it worked," Princeton coach Ron Fogarty said.
That's where it stayed until Topatigh's blast from just inside the blue line as the third period neared its halfway point.
Just less than three minutes later, Paganelli jumped on a loose pick only a few feet from the crease and sent it past RPI netminder Owen Savory to square the game at 2-2.
"Jake is the player that we recruited. He's starting to play really well," Fogarty said. "He was the catalyst for different lines."
Ryan Ferland finished with 23 saves and stopped the final 20 shots on goal.
"He made a couple good saves there at the end, but he rebounded there in the second and third and made six saves in overtime, especially on the power play," Fogarty said.
Princeton will complete the weekend Saturday at 7 p.m. against Union back on the Baker ice.
"We're learning through (some mistakes), but to make mistakes, to rebound, to get a point, it'll hopefully be a staple in our guys' minds to shore up those weak plays and we can have better success at the end," Fogarty said.
