Men’s Soccer Falls to Yale on Senior Day
November 16, 2019 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Despite a late goal by senior Sean McGowan, the Princeton University men's soccer team could not pull off a comeback against Yale University on its senior day as it fell 2-1 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium Sunday.
Prior to kickoff Princeton's senior class of Mohamed Abdelhamid, Jacob Schachner, Benjamin Issroff, Danny Hampton, Cole Morokhovich, Benjamin Martin, Bobby Hickson and Sean McGowan were honored in a ceremony.
While the Tigers were ultimately unable to comeback from the early deficit, they tallied 19 shots to 10 by the Bulldogs and led the corner kick count, 3-2, but it's late comeback attempt came up short.
Along with McGowan's goal, freshman Walker Gillespie was a threat all match long as he recorded five shots, four of them on goal. Morokhovich finished with three shots and in goal Abdelhamid recorded two saves while Schachner had one.
Yale was able to take an early advantage, scoring goals in the fifth and 21st minutes of the match. Princeton was able to record six shots in the half but could not put one into the back of the net and Yale would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The match was played to a stalemate through much of the second half, but the Tigers were able to make a late breakthrough. Senior Benjamin Martin had a shot blocked in the 86th minute but in the minute that followed, McGowan was able to fire a rocket past Yale's goalkeeper to make it a 2-1 contest.
As the Bulldogs already clinched the Ivy League championship, Princeton will await its fate for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships at the selection show on Monday, November 1 at 1 p.m. The selection show can be viewed at ncaa.com.
