Late Goal Stuns Men's Hockey At Quinnipiac, 4-3
December 29, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – A late goal stunned Princeton on the road at Quinnipiac as the Tigers could not hold a 2-0 lead and fell to the Bobcats, 4-3.
The Tigers led, 2-0, midway through the second period and then led, 3-2, early in the third but the host Bobcats rallied and snuck away with the win after Wyatt Bongiovanni scored with 1:26 remaining.
The loss negated a standout performance from Ryan Ferland in goal. The junior turned aside a career-high 44 saves, including 15 in the first period.
After staving off an early Quinnipiac push, Princeton struck first in the final minute of the opening period. Just seconds after Bobcats' goalie Keith Petruzzelli stoned Corey Andonovski from point blank range, the Tigers found a lead off the stick of defenseman Sami Pharaon.
Hamden native Jeremy Germain turned the Bobcats over behind their own net, and Andonovski slid a pass back to Pharaon at the point who threaded a low shot through traffic and by Petruzzelli for his first career goal with 40.2 seconds left in the first period.
A solid road period gave Princeton its first lead after 20:00 since holding a 1-0 lead at Colgate on November 22 – a span of seven games.
Princeton added to its lead with a powerplay goal from Liam Grande 2:34 into the second period. Jackson Cressey had the primary assist, sending a mid-air pass toward the side of the net which Grande batted in.
Quinnipiac countered with two Zach Metsa goals in the second half of the middle period. His first came at the 12:58 mark off a face-off, his shot from the halfboards slipping in shortside. 4:11 later, Metsa gathered a rebound in front following a Quinnipiac 3-on-2 and tied the game.
The Tigers had a chance to regain the lead late in the second period, but Petruzzelli snatched a Derek Topatigh breakaway offering with a diving glove save in the final minute after Topatigh was sprung from the penalty box.
Luke Keenan gave Princeton a 3-2 lead 3:26 into the third period, one-timing a Corey Andonovski pass to finish a 2-on-1 break. Just over four minutes later, Quinnipiac again tied the game via a Peter DiLiberatore goal. A bouncing puck found the Bobcat defenseman in the slot and his shot found the top corner to level the game at 3-3.
In the final minutes, Quinnipiac jumped on a Princeton turnover attempting to enter the zone, and Odeen Tufto dropped a pass to Bongiovanni who shot through a screen and found the top corner for the game-winner.
Princeton returns to Hobey Baker Rink next weekend for a two-game homestand. Up first is a matchup with Dartmouth on January 3 (7 p.m.) followed by Harvard on January 4 (7 p.m.)
