One year earlier, then-freshman Regan Barney was the surprise winner of the 400 IM title at the Ivy League Championships. On Friday night, the sophomore thrilled her home crowd by making sure that title wasn't going anywhere. Barney, who entered the weekend with the league's best time in the event, topped the field by more than 1.5 seconds to repeat as 400 IM in impressive fashion to highlight Day 3 of the Ivy League Championships.
Barney's win helped Princeton put even greater distance between itself and Brown for one of the top three spots in the league. While the team title looks like it will come down to either Harvard or Yale Saturday, Princeton has all but secured another top-three finish with 794 points, more than 150 ahead of the fourth-place Bears.
Barney was in a close second position after the fly portion of the final, but she took control from Harvard's Destiny Nelson during the 100 back portion. That lead grew during the breast portion, and she had more than enough in the free to secure a second straight league title.
Senior co-captain Joanna Curry placed fifth in the final in 4:16.36; she will also look for a back-to-back Ivy League championship Saturday when she competes for the 200 fly title.Regan Barney is your TWO-TIME Ivy League champion in the 400 IM!!! Junior Elaine Zhou finished fifth in the 100 fly in 53.78, while freshman Hannah Feng made her A final debut with an eighth-place time of 54.56. Senior Monica McGrath had a strong performance in the 100 free final, as she took fourth in 1:47.97, while the duo of Jenny Ma (1:02.65) and Zhou (1:03.50) placed seventh and eighth in the 100 breast final.
Princeton had another strong diving day, as the trio of Natasha MacManus, Sophia Peifer and Mimi Lin qualified for the 3-meter A final, which will be held Saturday night during the last session of the championship weekend. Sine Scribbick, who won the 1-meter Ivy League title Thursday night, barely missed the A final, but she bounced back to win the B final Friday night, while senior teammate Carolyn MacFarlane took third in the event.
The quartet of Izzy Reis, Ma, Zhou and McGrath closed the day by placing fifth in the 400 medley relay in 3:40.88.
The final day of the championships will begin with prelims at 11 am, and the finals session will begin at 6 pm; both will be streamed live on ESPN+.
