The nine-match roadtrip — which went through three different time zones — has finally come to an end, and the Princeton men's volleyball team is ready to make both its home and EIVA debut this weekend.
Princeton, which made a dramatic run to the 2018 EIVA championship match, will try to begin a similar journey with a pair of home matches at Dillon Gym this weekend against league rival Charleston (Friday, 7; Saturday, 4). All of Princeton's home matches will be streamed live this season on ESPN+, and links for both live video and live stats this weekend can be found above.
Princeton comes into the weekend with a 2-7 overall record, though the Tigers have easily played the most challenging schedule of any EIVA program. Six of the seven teams that have beaten the Tigers were ranked in the AVCA Top 15 at the time, and the seventh has moved to the the #11 spot since that match. Princeton picked up wins over both Erskine and UC-San Diego, and the Tigers took 12th-ranked CSU-Northridge deep into a fifth set in their last match of the road trip.
While 2018 All-American George Huhmann has gotten off to another strong start this season, few players in the league have been as impressive as junior Parker Dixon, who leads Princeton with 4.5 points and 3.9 kills per set. Through the first month, Dixon has already earned the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week twice, including last week; Dixon had 25 kills in the win at UC-San Diego, and he had 24 in the five-set thriller against the 12th-ranked CSUN.
Charleston is the newest EIVA program, and since it does not have a travel partner, the Golden Eagles play two road matches at Princeton on odd years, and then two home matches on even years. Princeton swept the season series in 2017, but Charleston avenged those results last season with a pair of home victories.
Following this weekend, Princeton will welcome George Mason for a 7 pm home match next Saturday. Mason earned a regular-season sweep over the Tigers en route to the top seed in the 2018 EIVA postseason, but Princeton pulled off a dramatic semifinal upset to reach its first final since 2014.
