In many ways, the tests that Princeton has faced outside of league play have played a significant role in why the Tigers find themselves atop the EIVA standings at the midway point of the 2019 season. Princeton has faced as daunting a non-league schedule as anybody in the EIVA, and it has allowed them to handle several pressure-packed moments, especially during a home-and-home sweep of NJIT two weeks ago.
With Spring Break on campus now, what better time to sharpen the sword one more time before the critical final five matches of league play?
Princeton has made the trip to Utah, where it will compete in the 2019 Provo Invitational this week. The Tigers will face a pair of Top-10 teams in both #8 BYU (Thursday, 7 pm MST) and #2 Hawaii (Friday, 4 pm MST), and they will conclude the trip Saturday afternoon with a showdown against McKendree (Saturday, 2 pm MST ... note the new start time).
Princeton (10-9, 8-1 EIVA) has won eight of its last 10 matches after going through an early-season gauntlet of top-ranked programs. All eight of those wins came in EIVA play and have put the Tigers one up on George Mason, Penn State and Saint Francis in the loss column; Princeton will play each of those teams one final time this season, starting with a road match at Mason during the final weekend of March.
The junior trio of Parker Dixon, George Huhmann and Greg Luck has led the Tigers throughout the season, with each earning at least one EIVA Player of the Week honor. Both Dixon and Huhmann rank in the top four in kills in league play, while Luck shares the top spot in aces with teammate Kendall Ratter (whose three straight aces won an epic five-setter at NJIT this month).
The Tigers will see their fair share of individual standouts this week. BYU's Gabi Garcia Fernandez ranks sixth nationally with 5.15 points per set, while Hawaii's Rado Parapunov ranks second in the NCAA with 5.31 points per set.
BYU is 11-6 on the season, and its only home loss came to #3 UC-Irvine. Hawaii is one of two unbeaten teams in the NCAA (Long Beach State); the Rainbow Warriors are 17-0 this season, which includes a pair of wins over Irvine. McKendree is 9-8 on the season, but it has won three in a row, including a victory over Ohio State.
