#8 BYU Fights Off Princeton Upset Attempt In 3-2 Thriller
March 22, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
The EIVA-leading Princeton men's volleyball team nearly posted its statement win of the 2019 season (so far) Thursday night in Provo, Utah, but the eighth-ranked BYU Cougars rallied at the Smith Fieldhouse to claim their 12th win of the season in a 3-2 thriller over the Tigers.
The junior duo of George Huhmann and Parker Dixon proved once again it could go toe-to-toe with one of the NCAA's elite programs, as the duo combined for 43 kills in a 19-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10 loss to BYU. Dixon hit .366 for the match, while Huhmann added four blocks and two service aces in the marathon opener to the BYU Tournament. The third starter from the junior class, Greg Luck added 10 kills and a team-best eight digs for the Tigers, who will play #2 Hawaii Friday at 2 pm local time, 4 pm ET.
Sophomore Joe Kelly paced the offense with 50 assists and helped Princeton hit .298 for the match, and he joined both Huhmann and freshman Jerod Nelsen with six digs. Nelsen added a team-high four aces for a Princeton team that pushed the pace at the service line, but couldn't quite get over the top against a BYU team that has only lost once at home this season.
