Tiger Men Post Strong First Day at NCAA Fencing Championships

After the first day at the NCAA fencing championships in Cleveland, rookie Mohamed Hamza is in second place among foil fencers and the Tigers are in fifth as a team heading into the final three rounds Friday at Cleveland State's Wolstein Center.
Friday's competition will begin at 9 a.m. for all three weapons with the top four finishers in each weapon advancing to the individual semifinals for a chance to compete for an NCAA title. Those semifinal competitions will begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3 here.
Hamza won 13 of 15 bouts Thursday to tie for the most of any foil fencer during the first day of competition.
In the épée competition, Wesley Yuan and Wesley Johnson are seventh and eighth with nine wins apiece, just one win out of fourth. Daniel Kwak is in a similar spot in the saber competition, with 10 wins and one out of fourth.
The top 12 finishers in each weapon at the end of Friday's competition will earn All-America status.
