Third-Ranked Tiger Lightweights Open 2019 By Retaining Murtaugh, Fosburgh Cups

The Princeton men's lightweight rowing team got its 2019 season off to a winning start Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie by retaining the Murtaugh Cup in a top-five showdown against Navy. The Tigers, coming off a silver medal at both the 2018 Sprints and IRA Championships, topped the Midshipmen by 7.7 seconds in the 1V race.

Princeton followed that up by retaining the Fosburgh Cup by about 10 seconds over Georgetown in another race on Lake Carnegie.

Princeton, ranked third in the preseason coaches poll, won its second straight Murtaugh Cup and 10th in 12 years by taking the varsity race in 6:30.7, while Navy placed second in 6:38.7. The Tigers also won the 2V race by four seconds, while Navy picked up victories in both the 3V and 4V races during windy conditions on Lake Carnegie.

Princeton will get a big test next Saturday on Lake Carnegie when it takes on reigning national champion and preseason #1 Columbia for the Campbell Cup during a full morning of Princeton rowing on ESPN+.
