Lightweight Men Face Reigning Champion Columbia In Early Test For Campbell Cup

The final minute of the 2018 men's lightweight racing season saw Princeton make a furious rally against an undefeated Columbia boat in the IRA grand final. The Tigers fell just short that morning on Mercer Lake, but they proved to be the clear No. 2 team in the sport, and they lost only two seniors from that boat this season.

The returners know that the most important races are still a couple months away, but they'd love nothing more than to get an early win over the Lions this spring and reclaim the Campbell Cup for the second time in its three-year existence. Ironically, if Princeton does knock off Columbia in the 11:30 varsity race — which will close a full morning of racing on Lake Carnegie — it would mirror the 2017 result, when Princeton defeated a Columbia boat coming off an IRA title.

The regatta is set to begin at 10:45 with a 4V race, and then move every 15 minutes until the 1V race at 11:30. The two teams split the four races last year.

Princeton got its 2019 season off to a terrific start last weekend with victories in both the Murtaugh Cup (over Navy) and Fosburgh Cup (over Georgetown) races; the photo above is from the Fosburgh Cup win Saturday evening, one of five Princeton home races this season; all Tiger home races this season are set to stream live on ESPN+; if you are not a subscriber yet, you can do so here.
