Men's Tennis Team Opens Saturday's Doubleheader with Win over Buffalo
March 09, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Running their winning streak to seven matches, the Princeton men's tennis team beat Buffalo and Bryant, both by 6-1 scores, to sweep a doubleheader Sunday in Jadwin in their final home matches before Ivy League play begins at month's end.
Against Buffalo, after the teams split the first two doubles matches to finish, Bill Duo and Karl Poling finished up a win on court three to claim the doubles point for Princeton, and once singles play got going, Justin Barki, Will Peters and Poling got Princeton to the clinching fourth point before Ryan Seggerman and Damian Rodriguez got Princeton its fifth and sixth points.
"Buffalo has a very good team," Princeton head coach Billy Pate said. "We always have highly competitive matches as they are well-coached and come at us with tons of energy ready to battle. I was pleased the way we were able to adjust and seize the momentum when Buffalo made a push in both singles and doubles. We were very solid overall and saw a lot of positives from several guys."
Against Bryant, the doubles point again came down to the first match on court, and Princeton again claimed that decisive match, this time with 23rd-ranked Rodriguez and Seggerman defeating Bryant's 27th-ranked Wilson Dong and Matt Kuhar in a battle of two of the nation's top 30 doubles teams.
Seggerman, Poling and Kabir Sarita won the first three singles matches off court to get Princeton to four points and clinch the match before Jimmy Wasserman and Payton Holden got the fifth and sixth points for Princeton.
"Bryant fought hard and we handled the challenge, particularly the close doubles point," Pate said. :It's good to wrap up a segment of home matches and head into the outdoor season with a lot of confidence. We're in a good place as a team and we are excited about the opportunities ahead. We'll get some meaningful practices outdoors in California during spring break and be ready for the USD tournament."
The USD event will run March 22-24 and feature three matches for the Tigers before Ivy League play begins in Princeton against Penn on March 30.
