San Diego to Host Men's Tennis Team in Final Pre-Ivy Matches
March 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Princeton will head to San Diego to compete in an event co-hosted by the University of San Diego and San Diego State.
The Tigers, at 15-4 and winners of seven in a row, will open the weekend Friday with a 9 a.m. Pacific Time/12 p.m. Eastern Time match against No. 48 Wichita State. Princeton will face either San Diego or Memphis in Saturday's match, which will be played at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET at USD if against USD or at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET, 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET, or 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET at San Diego State if against Memphis. Sunday's match will be at SDSU at a time to be determined and against one of Tulane, Drake, Harvard or SDSU.
Five of the eight teams in the field, including Princeton at No. 50, are ranked by the ITA, with No. 36 San Diego, No. 38 Harvard, No. 48 Wichita State and No. 49 Tulane as the others.
The field has five ITA-ranekd singles players, including No. 64 Ewan Moore (Tulane), No. 67 Gui Osorio (USD), No. 69 Vinny Gillespie (Drake), No. 72 Tom Hands (Drake), and No. 96 Luis Erlenbusch (Tulane). Six ITA-ranked doubles teams, including Princeton's No. 26 Damian Rodriguez and Ryan Seggerman, are in the field, along with No. 30 Oscar Cutting/David Stevenson (Memphis), No. 33 Logan Weber/Andy Zhou, No. 46 Joel Gamerov/August Holmgren (San Diego), No. 49 Brian Shi/Logan Weber (Harvard), and No. 68 Vinny Gillespie/Barny Thorold.
It's the fourth time the Tigers have competed in the event, along with a three-year run from 2014-16. It'll be the first time Princeton has faced Wichita State, and the Tigers have faced Memphis once, a win in this event in 2016, and San Diego has won 11 of the 14 all-time meetings, including the last one, in San Diego in 2017. Princeton last faced Tulane in 1941, a Tulane win, and SDSU has won 10 of the 13 all-time meetings, though Princeton won the last one, at SDSU in 2014. The Tigers and Drake have met once, a Drake win in this event in 2014, and, of course, the Tigers have a long series history with Ivy mate Harvard, where the Crimson lead 60-56 including a 4-2 Harvard win in the ECAC Championship earlier this season.
Tiger rookie Karl Poling enters the event at 16-0 on the dual-match season, with the wins coming at spots one, two, and three with a 9-0 record on court three. Classmate Justin Barki leads the team in dual-match doubles wins at 11-6, including an even-or-better record with all four doubles partners so far this spring.
The San Diego event is the Tigers' last before the Ivy League season begins March 30 versus Penn in Princeton.
