George's Big Day: Nominated for Tewaaraton and Drafted by WPLL
April 25, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Elizabeth George was named one of 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, given each year to the best player in college lacrosse this earlier this afternoon.
But her day got even better.
Five hours later George was selected in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League Spring Draft as the No. 10 overall selection by the Fight.
This is the second year George has been on the Watch List and first time being a top-25 nominee.
This season she has 64 points, scoring 43 goals and 21 assists. She adds a team-high 59 draw controls, 11 caused turnovers and 10 ground balls. George reached both the 100-point and 100-goal marks this season and set the Princeton record for career draw controls with 160 entering the final game of the regular season. She also owns the single game record for draws in a game with 11 versus Columbia from last year's Ivy League Tournament when she was named MVP.
"Elizabeth George is a phenomenal two way midfielder and has solidified herself as one of the top players in the Ivy League this season," WPLL Fight head coach Shannon Smith said. "Whether on the draw circle, on offense, or on defense, Elizabeth is going to add much needed depth to our midfield and make an immediate impact for us."
The 2019 WPLL Spring Draft consisted of five rounds and gave each of the five WPLL teams to select five new players to join their team for the WPLL season, bringing each team's final roster to 25 players.
The WPLL was founded by former Princeton assistant coach Michele DeJuliis, with Tewaaraton Trophy winner Rachael (Becker) DeCecco '03 serving as Senior Vice President. George would be the fourth Tiger to join the league, following Olivia Hompe '17 (Pride), Sarah Lloyd '14 (Command) and Amanda Leavell '17 (Fire).
