Wins Over ITA-Ranked Opponents Highlight Princeton's Defeat of Dartmouth
April 06, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Two wins over ITA-ranked opponents helped lead to a win over an ITA-ranked team Saturday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center as the Princeton men's tennis team beat 39th-ranked Dartmouth 6-1 to open a home Ivy League weekend.
Now 18-6 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy, the Tigers will turn around to host Harvard Sunday at 1 p.m. looking to stay perfect in the league.
"Top to bottom it was a complete team effort," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "Doubles really set a tone for us today and that momentum carried on through singles. Dartmouth is well-coached and they have a great team this year. We knew they would compete hard and that helped our focus and sense of urgency. We'll enjoy it for a very short time as we have an equally tough assignment again tomorrow with Harvard. We'll need the same type of energy and execution."
Princeton began the day with a doubles-point win, helped by Payton Holden and Ryan Seggerman, the 76th-ranked doubles pair in the nation, defeating the seventh-ranked team of Charlie Broom and David Horneffer. That win followed Karl Poling and Damian Rodriguez winning their match at second, both with 6-3 scores.
Dartmouth had the first singles win, coming on court three, but wins from Seggerman, Bill Duo and Will Peters followed on courts two, five and six to get Princeton to the fourth point. Poling followed with a win over the nation's 53rd-ranked singles player, Broom, on court one before Davey Roberts closed out a three-setter on court four.
