Reynolds, Blanchard Deal Shutouts as Tigers Sweep Brown
April 06, 2019 | Softball
Two shutouts and a 12-strikeout homecoming highlighted a doubleheader sweep of Brown for the Princeton softball team Saturday in Rhode Island.
The Tigers swept the Bears 1-0 behind sophomore Allie Reynolds and 6-0 behind rookie Ali Blanchard to improve to 5-3 in the Ivy.
In the first game, Princeton's lone run came in the fourth inning when a Kaitlyn Waslawski leadoff single came around on a stolen base and two sacrifices to put the Tigers ahead. Princeton left 10 runners on base in the opener, but that didn't end up mattering thanks to Reynolds' three-hit, one-walk, four-strikeout performance in which only one runner reached third base. That came in the first inning when Brown had a Karina Chavarria leadoff single that used a sacrifice and a grounder to get to third but was left there after another ground ball. Kaylee Grant went 3 for 3 in the opener.
In game two, Princeton got out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on three hits and two walks with a two-run double from Keeley Walsh and a two-run triple from Alex Colón as the highlights. Princeton tacked a run on in the third when Walsh had a leadoff double and Mackenzie Meyer followed that with a single. Both Walsh and Colón finished the game 3 for 4 at the plate.
Blanchard, who prepped at the Moses Brown School across the street from Brown's athletic complex, allowed just two hits and four walks, striking out 12 as the Lincoln, R.I. native returned to her home state for her first games there as a Tiger. The K total surpassed her previous career best of eight against Buffalo on March 16.
It was the first time the Tigers turned in shutouts in both halves of a doubleheader since Princeton shut out Brown in 2015 in games moved to Bordentown High School due to weather. It was the first time the Tigers did so on the road since sweeping Rider in 2006, and it was the first doubleheader shutout on the road in the Ivy since 2005 at Yale.
Princeton and Brown will close the series with a 12:30 p.m. single game Sunday. Live stats will be available here and the ESPN+ broadcast will be available here.
