Poling Named ITA Northeast Regional Rookie of the Year
May 18, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Already the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Karl Poling is now the ITA Northeast Regional Rookie of the Year.
Poling adds the honor to his first-team All-Ivy singles recognition, and after he was the first Tiger in 16 years to win Ivy Rookie of the Year, he is the first Tiger in 20 years, since Judson Williams '02, to earn ITA Regional Rookie of the Year honors.
Poling led all Tigers with a 30-4 singles record between the fall and the spring, including a team-best 22 wins in the dual-match season. He went 6-2 at the top spot, 7-1 on court two and 9-0 on court three, playing primarily third singles when the dual-match season began before playing more in the second spot in March and holding down the top position for the final six Ivy matches, going 3-2 in those matches against the top-line players in the Ivy and 4-2 in the league overall. Among his wins were over 53rd-ranked Charlie Broom of Dartmouth and 87th-ranked Alan Nunez Aguilera of St. John's. Poling was ranked 82nd when the dual-match season began before rejoining the rankings in late February and early March at 125th and then again at 97th and 117th in April.
In doubles, Poling had 18 wins between the fall and the spring, and his 17 dual-match doubles wins led the team. He played most of those at second and third doubles, going 9-8 at second and 7-2 at third and splitting his time primarily between playing alongside Will Peters, Justin Barki and Damian Rodriguez.
