Poling Earns Ivy Rookie of the Year, Part of First-Team All-Ivy Trio
May 02, 2019 | Men's Tennis
Karl Poling is the Ivy League men's tennis Rookie of the Year and is one of three Tigers to earn first-team All-Ivy League recognition, the Ivy League office announced Wednesday.
Poling is a first-team singles honoree, and sophomore Ryan Seggerman and junior Payton Holden were named first-team all-league doubles. The honors are the first for any of those players.
Poling is Princeton's first Ivy Rookie of the Year honoree since Darius Craton '06 in 2003 and fifth in the award's history, which began in 1988. Princeton won four in a 14-year stretch from 1990-2003, including Andy Weiss '94 in 1990, Dave Murphy '96 in 1992, Judson Williams '02 in 1999, and Craton.
Poling led all Tigers with a 30-4 record between the fall and the spring, including a team-best 22 wins in the dual-match season. He went 6-2 at the top spot, 7-1 on court two and 9-0 on court three, playing primarily third singles when the dual-match season began before playing more in the second spot in March and holding down the top position for the final six Ivy matches, going 3-2 in those matches against the top-line players in the Ivy and 4-2 in the league overall. Among his wins were over 53rd-ranked Charlie Broom of Dartmouth and 87th-ranked Alan Nunez Aguilera of St. John's. Poling was ranked 82nd when the dual-match season began before rejoining the rankings in late February and early March at 125th and then again at 97th and 117th in April.
Seggerman and Holden, who were recently placed third on the alternate list for the NCAA doubles championship, are ranked 34th by the ITA and had a 7-3 record as a pair and 4-2 in Ivy matches, playing nine of the 10 times at the top spot, including every Ivy match. Ranked as high as 17th in the nation, Holden and Seggerman were 4-1 against ITA-ranked teams, getting two wins over Logan Weber and Andy Zhou of Harvard, who were ranked No. 33 and No. 37 when they met, as well as a win over No. 7 Charlie Broom and David Horneffer of Dartmouth, and a win over Columbia's 26th-ranked Jack Lin and William Matheson.
